How does one find their passion?

Find your passion

Finding your passion and purpose is all the rage these days. (maybe it always has been I don’t know)

But Why?

I think it is because we believe that people with the right passion have the ability to change the world in a positive way. Even if it’s only by a small part.

But finding your passion is hard. Some people are lucky and just know from the moment they are born what they are supposed to do in life. My sister for instance knew since she was very little that she wanted to be a doctor and that she wanted to make people better.

Journey to passion

My journey to this passion thing was/is a bit different. For me it was and sometimes still is so overwhelming. For one There are so many options out there. I wanted to be an astronaut, i wanted to be a pilot, i wanted to be a professional dancer, I wanted to be a teacher, at a point in my life, I even wanted to be an interior care-taker (which is my fancy way of saying cleaning lady)

There were and are so many options out there. Yet somehow none of them seem(ed) a fit. What if I decide to be one of those things. I go for it, and it turns out that it isn’t what I want. What if I fail miserably at it. I have kids to take care of.

Anyway. I now think that maybe the way to finding your passion is about connecting the dots and discovering what works for you. The way to finding your passion is to not only discover it, but to build it.

Some questions

So there is no real road map here, but there are a bunch of questions that can steer you in the right direction:

  • What do you really like to do?
  • How do you want to bring value to people’s lives?
  • Would you do it even if you were not paid for it?
  • What do you want to get better at? and most importantly
  • What makes you feel at home? Build your home.

For me these answers as follows and this may or may not change over the years but I need to write it down and let you know.

I want to write and create meaningful content stuff that makes people think about their mind, their heart, their intelligence, their ability to live love and grow. I want to be that friend. I want to inspire you to achieve your goals, show you the best of you is possible and make you take appropriate action. I also think I would never stop coding or programming. It is something I would do even if I was not getting paid for it.

This is what makes me feel at home for a good part and I want you to write yours down too. It doesn’t have to be pretty. But it will steer you in the right direction if you feel like you don’t have your passion. I know I am looking for something and I also know there is something in me that needs to be out there. And it makes me believe that there is something in you to:

Maybe there is a book you like to write

Maybe you want to start that business

Maybe you want to do a TED talk

Maybe there is a song you like to compose

Maybe you finally want to talk to that one person

Maybe you want to just travel and see the world

Maybe you just want to go out and have a drink with your friend

A lot of maybes I want to encourage you to change into “surely’s”. Don’t get to the end of your life still wondering. Get to the end of your life so you can tell God that you used all the talent he gave you.

With a twinkle and a smile,
